How Ergonomically sound is your working environment?

Please answer the following questions Yes or No.

Are any of your colleagues currently receiving treatment for physical ailments such as; upper and/or lower back
pain, strained neck, shoulder problems, tennis elbow, Carpal Tunnel syndrome, tingling in the fingers, loss
of feeling in the legs, or headaches?

Are these employees missing time from work in order to receive these treatments?

Do these or any other staff members spend more than 4 hours a day at their computer workstation?

Do any of the chairs in your offices have only 4 legs/castors?

Do your chairs give you good lower back support and are comfortable to sit in for extended periods of time?

If you take a quick audit of your offices, do you see anyone working at their computer with their feet dangling in the air?

When you turn a monitor screen to OFF, can you see your reflection?

Are all of the monitors situated directly in front of the workers using them?

Do some workers have to look up or down to view their monitor?

Does anyone have to “reach” to use his or her keyboard or mouse? (Extending their arms so they are almost straight out.)

Do you have employees that spend the majority of their workday on the telephone?

Are there staff members that work off of source documents?

overhead lighting the main source for light in your offices?

Do any workstations appear too cluttered to work effectively?

Is there adequate legroom underneath the desks?

Is noise minimized wherever possible?

Do any members of your business use a computer and also interact with clients at the same time?

Does anyone in your firm use a laptop computer?

Do more than 50% of your colleagues have and use a computer at home?

Have you often seen coworkers taking stretch breaks?

If you have answered YES to the majority of these questions, especially the first 3, then your business has employees that are having pain/discomfort problems. This can add up to significant costs to the employees, physically and financially, as well as very significant costs to you, the employer. Please call CEsafety at 384-2230 so we can arrange a time for us to get together and discuss what can be done to improve the Ergonomics at your business.

Canadian Golf Course Safety

When you think of safety on a golf course, you think of someone yelling “fore” after an errant golf shot, or the danger of being on the course when lightning strikes.

These however are not the safety issues that are now hot button topics for the golf course owner, operator, or manager in Canada. Heat stress, golf cart safety, violence and harassment in the workplace, WHMIS, signs of a “safety culture”…, these are what the Provincial government agencies are looking for.

Inspectors are conducting safety checks of golf courses to ensure that they are in compliance with having a joint Health & Safety Committee in place, with certified members, trained safety representatives, safety programs implemented and safety hazards corrected.

So, how do you know what golf safety programs you will need? This is where CEsafety comes in.

CEsafety is the golf course safety specialist that provides safety programs and services, which are specific to golf courses. No generic formulas – all programs and templates have been developed for use by the golf industry, and cover all the information you need to operate your course safely and in compliance with government regulations.

We are a national corporate member of the NGCOA in both Canada and the U.S., and our programs and products are designed to meet and exceed all provincial, federal and OSHA standards.

We offer over 50 safety programs, templates and training presentations in our customized golf occupational health and safety manual. Updated policies and information regarding violence and harassment in the workplace are also included.

CEsafety will perform a thorough risk analysis of your facility in conjunction with your management team. All safety hazards found are highlighted, categorized, prioritized and have solutions provided for in an easy to read report.

Training seminars on due diligence for management teams and seminars on safety responsibilities for employees are also available.

For the first time, inspectors are looking at campgrounds with the safety of young and new workers in mind. Many questions are raised as to what you, the owner/operator/manager need to do to be in compliance with provincial, state, and federal regulations. CEsafety is a member of OPCA, and understands your needs.

“Ministry inspectors will place special emphasis on the safety of young and new workers in locations such as construction sites, retail stores, restaurants, and enterprises involving tourism. Inspectors will also check workplaces such as golf courses, camps, temporary amusement parks, and locations where workers are engaged in activities such as landscaping.

It is the third year in a row a young and new worker blitz will be held.

As in previous years, inspectors will take a zero tolerance approach to any contraventions involving minimum age requirements, guarding issues, or personal protective equipment”.

Between 2004 and 2009, 27 young workers aged 15-24 were killed and 466 others were critically injured at work.

What does this mean for my Business?

GHS will be replacing WHMIS in Canada when the legislation changes; expected to happen in 2012. At that time employers will need to replace the WHMIS information and materials in the workplace, including the MSDS (SDS) sheets and workplace labelling systems. As well, employers will need to retrain all employees.

GHS has been put forward by OSHA in the US as well, and will affect the US requirements for workplace, consumers and pesticide use. It is expected to be rolled out in 2012.

What is GHS?

The Global Harmonized System (GHS) will establish new rules for hazardous chemicals in transportation, workplace use and consumer use, as well as special rules for pesticides.
GHS also includes new Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), or Safety Data Sheet (SDS), requirements and new hazard symbols.

It comprises standards for:

Classifying chemicals

Symbols for hazards

Labeling requirements

Material Safety Data Sheet requirements

CEsafety has partnered with:

The Compliance Center, Hazardous Materials Regulations Specialists in North America,
for the rollout of the GHS in WHMIS, and will be offering all the training, materials and services you need to bring your business into compliance:

GHS Training – Onsite or Online

GHS Program Information & Publications

GHS Posters & Workplace Materials

SDS Sheets

Chemical Labels, Signs & Tags

As always, CEsafety will be offering industry specific products and services to our Golf, Campground, Automotive, School Board and General Industry Clients.
