GLOBAL HARMONIZED SYSTEM

GHS IS REPLACING WHMIS IN 2012 IN CANADA.
GHS IS BEING ROLLED OUT BY OSHA IN THE U.S IN 2012

What does this mean for my Business?

GHS will be replacing WHMIS in Canada when the legislation changes; expected to happen in 2012. At that time employers will need to replace the WHMIS information and materials in the workplace, including the MSDS (SDS) sheets and workplace labelling systems. As well, employers will need to retrain all employees.

GHS has been put forward by OSHA in the US as well, and will affect the US requirements for workplace, consumers and pesticide use. It is expected to be rolled out in 2012.

What is GHS?

The Global Harmonized System (GHS) will establish new rules for hazardous chemicals in transportation, workplace use and consumer use, as well as special rules for pesticides.
GHS also includes new Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), or Safety Data Sheet (SDS), requirements and new hazard symbols.

It comprises standards for:

  • Classifying chemicals
  • Symbols for hazards
  • Labeling requirements
  • Material Safety Data Sheet requirements
